What oils are good for curly hair?
Curly hair needs special care and attention, and choosing the right hair oil can make a big difference. Dr Mahima Aggarwal, Consultant – Dermatology, Fortis Hospital suggests some of the best oils for curly locks:
1. Coconut oil
“Coconut oil is a rich source of neutralizing acids and antioxidants. “Its low molecular weight and straight chain allows it to penetrate the hair shaft and prevent protein loss,” said Dr Aggarwal. Coconut oil also provides increased lubrication between hair strands, making it easier to cut, smooth, and stretch the cuticle, which improves hair health and helps maintain the appearance of your curls. It also contains antibacterial and antifungal agents that promote good hair health.

2. Almond oil
A dermatologist explains that almond oil is a rich source of vitamin E and fatty acids rich in double bonds. It has been shown to protect against ultraviolet (UV) rays, protecting hair from structural damage caused by sun exposure. Almond oil also keeps hair soft and moist, preventing your curls from drying out. It also increases hair elasticity by filling the gap between the cuticle cells.
3. Castor Oil
Castor oil is another popular hair oil that provides moisturizing and nourishing effects. Like coconut oil, it also has antibacterial properties, protecting the scalp and hair from bacterial damage. “Castor oil also acts as an inhibitor of prostaglandin D2 synthase (PGD2), which helps in pattern hair loss or androgenic alopecia,” said Dr. Aggarwal.
4. Argan oil
Although it is usually used as a cooking oil, argan oil has been used for skin and hair care. It has sebostatic properties that regulate the production of skin sebum. This oil also has excellent water holding capacity, giving a moisturizing effect to your curls, keeping them bouncy.
5. Olive oil
Olive oil has been used for skin and hair care for centuries in many societies. Virgin olive oil is a rich source of antioxidants. Olive oil has emollient functions by closing the cuticle and sealing the moisture inside.
However, the doctor suggests that coconut oil is considered better than olive oil in this regard. Like almond oil, olive oil also protects against the damage of ultraviolet B rays. “For people suffering from psoriasis, an inflammatory condition of the scalp that causes itching and redness of the scalp, olive oil has shown promising results when combined with various ingredients,” said Dr. Aggarwal.
6. Fenugreek oil
Fenugreek seeds and fenugreek oil have recently gained popularity and have been shown to improve androgenic alopecia by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone. Fenugreek oil also has emollients that help strengthen and soften the hair, in addition to antifungal and antibacterial actions.

7. Sesame Oil
Sesame or til oil has anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant effects. It has also been shown to have protective measures against UV damage. Sesame oil improves penetration into the hair follicle and increases skin circulation, thereby increasing hair growth and reducing graying of hair. It softens the hair follicle and prevents the drying of your curls.
So go ahead, try these hair oils and rock those curls with confidence, and let your luscious locks do the talking!
